51s fall to Tacoma, denied playoff spot

The Las Vegas 51s’ postseason hopes evaporated today with a 6-3 loss to Tacoma at Cashman Field.

The 51s came into the day tied with El Paso for the Pacific Coast League’s Pacific Southern division lead, but the loss to the Rainiers and a win by the Chihuahuas over Reno eliminated Las Vegas from postseason contention. The reason: El Paso finished over .500 in its games with Las Vegas this season, meaning the Chihuahuas would win the division under a tiebreaker provision if the teams finished with the same record.

Tacoma scored five runs in the sixth inning, aided by two errors, to defeat the 51s. Logan Verrett (11-6) got the loss for Las Vegas, while Tacoma starter Chien-Ming Wang (9-5) got the win.

Las Vegas shortstop Matt Reynolds went 4 for 4 with two doubles, and Brandon Allen supplied two doubles and a pair of RBIs.

The 51s (77-66) wrap up the season with a 12:05 p.m. game Monday against Tacoma at Cashman Field.
