A teenager arrested in the wounding of a police officer in a patrol vehicle might face adult criminal charges, the district attorney in Las Vegas said.
The 17-year-old could face up to 40 years in prison on two counts of attempted murder of a police officer with use of a deadly weapon, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Tuesday.
The names of the teen and the officers involved in the 12:15 p.m. Sunday shooting weren't immediately made public.
Police have called the shooting an ambush.
Two officers were in the vehicle, authorities said. One was treated at University Medical Center for a hand wound that officials said was not non-life threatening.
The officers were in a marked police SUV waiting to turn into a shopping center in southeastern Las Vegas where a disturbance had been reported in a store. A male with a semi-automatic handgun walked up and fired multiple shots, then ran away, police Sgt. John Sheahan said.
The officer who was not hurt chased the suspect and arrested him at a convenience store parking lot on the same block.
The weapon was recovered at the scene.
Sheahan and Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill emphasized during briefings with reporters on Sunday that the arrest was made without officers firing their weapons.
The Sunday shooting was the second shooting of a police officer in three days in Las Vegas.
Officer Jeremy Robertson, 37, was hospitalized Friday after he was wounded in the leg by a spray of shots from an AK-47 assault rifle while investigating a home burglary call.
Police have said Robertson is expected to make a full recovery.
Clemon Hudson, 20, was arrested in the backyard after he was subdued by a police dog, and Steven Turner, 24, was taken into custody after he was found a few blocks away.
Police said Turner had a gunshot wound to his lower leg believed to have resulted from shots returned by Robertson and his partner, Officer Malik Grego-Smith.
