CARSON CITY — The state Board of Examiners on Tuesday approved a $17.8 million contract for construction of a new office for the Department of Motor Vehicles at its East Sahara Avenue site in Las Vegas.

It is the busiest DMV office in the state.

The contract has been awarded to Core Construction Services of Nevada Inc. of Las Vegas. The company will provide all labor and materials.

Gus Nunez, administrator of the state Public Works Board, said groundbreaking will be Sept. 17.

The project was approved by the 2015 Legislature and will be financed by bonds to be repaid from the state’s highway fund and pollution-control budgets.

The new building will be west of the present office.

The DMV will continue to use its present building during construction, but some services will be limited. Parking will also be reduced.

The present building will be torn down when the new office is finished.
