It's a saddening statistic: Despite making up only 4 percent of the American driving population, teenagers comprise 18 percent of fatality victims.

On Friday, organizers of a Nevada program aimed at reducing the number of teen fatalities will hold a kickoff celebration to raise awareness of the problem and educate young drivers and their parents about ways to solve it.

The Zero Teen Fatalities launch event is scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Pole Position Raceway, 4175 S. Arville.

Teen attendees who register on-site or in advance for the program will be offered free races and arcade game credits, food from the Raising Cane's restaurant chain, Coca-Cola beverages and music from CBS Radio. Chapman Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram staff will be on hand with vehicles from the dealership. Door prizes will be given away beginning at 8 p.m., and State Farm will present a $10,000 gift. Check-in and registration will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

"Because teens are overrepresented in crashes and fatalities on Nevada's roadways, we are working to present safe driving in a positive light and challenging teens to educate each other," said Lyndsi Patterson, Zero Teen Fatalities program manager, in a news release. "This event is only the beginning to an exciting year filled with opportunities for teens to have fun while receiving and sharing important information that may save their life someday."

Zero Teen Fatalities is operated by the Nevada Department of Public Safety and is federally funded through the Office of Traffic Safety. More information is available at www.stayingundead.com.
