RENO — Controlled substances charges make up almost half of the 41 Burning Man arrests made by sheriff's deputies this year.

The Reno Gazette Journal reports the Pershing County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 people between Aug. 26 and Sept. 9, up from seven last year.

Jerry Allen took over for former Sheriff Richard Machado in January. He said he planned to take a more stringent approach to the massive event in the desert that draws thousands of attendees.

There were 19 charges for trafficking of a controlled substance and six for possession of a controlled substance, with others ranging from grand kidnap to battery on a public officer.

No arrests were made by Bureau of Land Management agents that were also providing law enforcement for the event.
