Campfire gets out of control near Las Vegas airport

A campfire at a vacant lot near McCarran International Airport got out of control late Wednesday, spreading to brush in the area, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Someone reported a large fire near East Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane just after 11 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief John Steinbeck said.

No injuries were reported, and two fire engines and one rescue unit — a total of 10 firefighters — responded to the call, he said.

The fire was in an area where a large number of homeless people often camp, Steinbeck said.

Fire crews remained on scene until about 1:10 a.m., Steinbeck said.
