Police: Man dead in freeway overpass fall was murder suspect

Updated Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015 | 5:19 p.m.

Police say a 55-year-old man who jumped to his death from a soaring Las Vegas freeway overpass was about to face murder charges in the beating and strangulation of his wife in April.

The Clark County coroner on Thursday identified the dead man as Hannabal E. Stewart. His death was ruled a suicide.

Lt. Dan McGrath says detectives were about to turn charges over to the district attorney when Stewart jumped Tuesday from a U.S. Highway 95 ramp at the busy Spaghetti Bowl interchange.

He died of multiple injuries at University Medical Center, according to the Coroner's Office.

Police say the body of 42-year-old Marrie Stewart was found a little after 6:30 a.m. April 20 in a burned apartment on Spring Mountain Road near Hualapai Way.

The husband and wife lived together in the apartment, and Hannabal Stewart escaped the fire, police said.

Medical examiners determined Marrie Stewart had head injuries and had been strangled. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Hannabal Stewart was the only known suspect in his wife's death, and Metro will work with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for a final review of the case, police said.
