Free balance and memory screenings offered at Lou Ruvo Center

Feeling unsteady on your feet lately?

In honor of National Fall Prevention Day today, the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is hosting free balance and memory screenings. The screenings will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Lou Ruvo Center, 888 W. Bonneville Ave.

Physical and occupational therapists will evaluate each participant's balance, and researchers will conduct a memory assessment at the event. The screenings will not result in a diagnosis, but the tests will indicate if the person should pursue further medical evaluation. Registration, which is required, can be done here.

Health officials say falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in older adults. An elderly person is seen in an emergency room every 15 seconds because of a fall-related injury.

Participants deemed at high risk for falling can partake in a free, seven-week educational program called "Stepping On" to reduce their risk. A program will take place at the Lou Ruvo Center in October.

"Stepping On" programs also are available at the following locations:

• Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive in Las Vegas. 702-229-1701

• Dignity Health's Women's Care Center of Excellence, 2651 Paseo Verde Suite 180 in Henderson. 702-616-4901

The Southern Nevada Health District suggests people reduce their risk of falling by exercising regularly, removing items in homes that could cause someone to trip and installing handrails and better lighting. Older people should also have their vision checked and review their medications that may cause lightheadedness or drowsiness with a medical provider.
