A suspicious item found during an investigation by Metro Police and the FBI in the northeast valley prompted the evacuation of homes in the area this afternoon, according to police.

Police and the FBI began the investigation about 6 a.m. at a home in the 4900 block of East Monroe Avenue, near North Nellis Boulevard and East Washington Avenue, Metro Police Officer Larry Hadfield said.

During the investigation, officials found a suspicious device and summoned the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue bomb squad about 1:40 p.m., according to police and the fire department.

As a precaution, nearby homes were evacuated, Hadfield said.

The bomb squad departed the scene by about 5 p.m., fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.
