Attorney general issues opinion on Clark County retiree insurance

CARSON CITY — People who retire from Clark County government jobs may continue their group health insurance coverage, and the county cannot set up a separate plan for those drawing pensions, the state Attorney General’s Office says.

In a legal opinion addressed to Clark County District Attorney Steven B. Wolfson, the Attorney General’s Office said, “Local government employers may only offer to retirees coverage that is also available to active employees.”

Deputy Attorney General Dennis L. Belcourt said, however, that premiums do not have to be the same between active employees and retirees.

Also, employees who retire and opt out of the local government’s insurance plan may return, Belcourt said.
