A piece of Las Vegas history has been removed from the Strip as crews worked to take down the Riviera name from the former hotel and casino.
The Riviera sign was removed Monday ahead of the building's demolition this summer and will be kept at a museum for neon signs being developed in Reno.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority purchased the Riviera in February 2015 for $182.5 million plus $8.5 million in related transaction costs. It plans to replace the 26-acre site with an expanded Las Vegas Convention Center.
The 60-year-old casino-hotel where Liberace and Frank Sinatra once were headliners closed last May. It had struggled in recent years as development around it went dormant, deterring walk-in traffic.
