Wind advisory for Southern Nevada to California, Arizona borders

Updated Friday, April 15, 2016 | 10:20 a.m.

A wind advisory warning of gusts as high as 50 mph has been issued for Southern Nevada to the California and Arizona borders through Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service said the winds will begin increasing this morning and peaking in the afternoon before gradually decreasing Saturday across the region, from the Las Vegas Valley north to Nye County.

Crosswinds can make travel difficult with blowing dust possible.

Clark County also issued an air quality advisory because of the possibility of blowing dust through Saturday afternoon.

At this time, unhealthy levels of dust are not occurring, officials said. As part of the county's dust-control program, Department of Air Quality officials have asked operators of construction sites to take precautions to prevent blowing dust.

Officials will continue to monitor conditions and will post an alert on the forecast page of the DAQ website if unhealthy levels occur.

There may also be dangerous boating conditions on lakes, where boats may capsize in rough waters.

The warnings issued late Thursday night are in place through 5 p.m. Saturday.

Areas along the California and Arizona borders will also be affected, including Death Valley National Park and San Bernardino County, and the western Grand Canyon and Lake Havasu City.
