Electrical fire causes 55K in damage to northwest Las Vegas home

An electrical fire displaced three adults and caused $55,000 in property damage in northwest Las Vegas on Sunday evening, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Fire crews were called about 9:30 p.m. to a single-story house at 5513 Deodar Drive near North Michael Way and West Smoke Ranch Road after receiving calls from neighbors to report smoke was coming from the house and the windows were cracking.

Nobody was home when firefighters arrived, so they forced their way inside the house. Fire crews found thick black smoke, almost down to the floor and a small fire in the living room, fire officials said. They put the blaze out within a couple of minutes. Nobody was injured.

The fire was mostly smoldering polyurethane foam, which is used for padding in sofas and beds, fire crews said. The smoke spread throughout most of the house, leaving a layer of black soot on nearly everything in the house. A sofa and a small table were damaged in the fire.

Fire investigators believe the blaze started under a small table next to the sofa. A power strip with several common household electrical items was found at the point of origin.

Electrical fires are the second leading cause of fires in Las Vegas and cause more damage than all other types of fires combined, fire official said.
