A 10-year-old Metro Police dog set to retire soon died unexpectedly on Monday, the agency said.
The dog, named Boris, died hours after finishing a search about 5 a.m., police said in a Facebook post.
“Boris was nearly 11 years old and getting ready for retirement,” police said. “He was scheduled to live on a 2.5-acre estate in Washington.”
The K-9 was handled by Officer DuWayne Layton, and they were well known at Marc Kahre Elementary School, where they made appearances, police said.
“He was a loyal partner and served his community and police department right to the last minute,” the post said.
