Storm soaks northern valley amid flood warning

Updated Monday, Aug. 22, 2016 | 8:45 p.m.

A storm system spawned flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings Monday night as much of the northern Las Vegas Valley was drenched with heavy rain.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the northern valley until 11:15 p.m. As of 8:45, significant flooding had disrupted traffic across that region.

There were reports of quarter-size hail and wind gusts up to 65 mph in the northeast near Nellis Air Force Base, meteorologist Barry Pierce said.

The severe thunderstorm warning was to expire as of 9 p.m. but was extended until 9:30 p.m. to include Lake Mead National Recreation Area as the storm headed east, Pierce said.

Spotty areas of rain were reported across the valley Monday evening, and rainfall valleywide should linger until about midnight, he said.
