Man killed in shootout with NHP trooper identified

A man who died during a shootout with a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Friday morning has been identified.

Matthew Gibbon, 41, died from a gunshot wound to the head, and his manner of death was ruled a homicide, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

The incident began as a traffic stop about 12 a.m. on Boulder Highway near U.S. 95, NHP Trooper Chelsea Stuenkel said. A trooper had pulled over a car driven by a woman and occupied by Gibbon and another man.

A chase ensued and Gibbon fled, then began shooting at the trooper, prompting the trooper to return fire, Stuenkel said. The trooper was not injured and Gibbon was pronounced dead on scene.
