UNLV President Len Jessup says university officials should think twice before hosting another presidential debate now that they know the pricetag for providing the venue for the Oct. 19 faceoff between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Jessup faced tough questions from the higher education system's governing board Friday about the estimated cost of $2.4 million to $3.1 million.
The university's cost soared as the overall cost for the event climbed to $8 million from $4 million.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority approved $4 million in city funding for UNLV to host the debate, and UNLV fundraising was expected to cover the rest.
Jessup says fundraising fell way short due to security costs higher than expected and donations were less than anticipated.
