Apartment fire

A fire at an apartment building Tuesday night did about $568,000 in damage and forced 16 people from their homes, according to the Henderson Fire Department.

Nobody was injured, but two pet birds died in the fire, officials said.

The fire was reported about 9:10 p.m. at a two-story, six-unit building on Eastminister Court, near Burkholder Boulevard and North Major Avenue, officials said.

A second-story unit was engulfed in flames, but firefighters put out the blaze before it spread to other apartments, officials said. The residents, who discovered the fire in a bedroom, got out safely and had a neighbor call 911, officials said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. Damage was estimated at $518,400 for the building and $50,000 for contents, officials said.
