Police in Las Vegas are investigating what caused a six-hour breakdown of the region's main 911 emergency and 311 police and fire information systems.

Emergency calls to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were answered from about 3:30 p.m. until shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday by dispatchers in neighboring North Las Vegas and Henderson.

Las Vegas police dispatchers were sent to the neighboring cities to help handle the volume, but officials said some calls experienced delays. Non-emergency calls weren't accepted.

The Las Vegas police 911 center typically receives hundreds of calls an hour.

Officer Larry Hadfield called the interruption a critical infrastructure failure.

The Las Vegas emergency dispatch system recently underwent a $2.3 million upgrade after a similar glitch in late June left about 400 callers with a busy signal.
