Candle sparks house fire in west valley, leaving 2 displaced

Two adults and five dogs escaped a burning house today in the west valley, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

One person was treated for minor smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

Also according to the department:

Crews were called about 10:30 a.m. to a two-story home on Cherry River Drive, near Buffalo and Alta drives, officials said.

Firefighters were met by heavy flames and smoke billowing from the upstairs of the wood and stucco house.

The blaze, blamed on a candle left unattended in a room being renovated, was out in less than 10 minutes.

The occupants were "extremely distraught" and were helped by counselors. Damage was estimated at $40,000.

The fire was accidental in nature and the Nevada chapter of the Red Cross is assisting the residents.
