Family dispute leaves 1 dead in Mountain’s Edge

Updated Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 | 11:15 p.m.

A father shot and killed his 19-year-old son Friday afternoon in the southwest valley after the son stabbed him during a fight, according to Metro Police.

Police and medical crews were called shortly before 4 p.m. to the 10000 block of Keifer Valley Street, near Cimarron Road and Mountains Edge Parkway.

According to police:

The incident began hours earlier when the father and son had a verbal altercation. At about 3:50 p.m., the son attacked his father with a 12-inch, hunting-style knife, stabbing him several times.

The severely injured father, 40, responded by shooting his son multiple times, police said.

The father was in stable condition at University Medical Center.

There were five to six family members at the home, including two children. Some witnessed the fight and were interviewed by detectives.

They are "very, very distraught," Metro Lt. Dan McGrath said, describing the case, which he described as hard to imagine. "How do you explain that?"

The investigation is in its preliminary stages and it wasn't clear if charges would be filed.

The man killed will be identified by the Clark County Coroner's Office.
