Updated Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016 | 2:07 p.m.

A man died Sunday afternoon while hiking at Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Area after suffering what appeared to be a medical episode, according to Metro Police.

Metro’s Search and Rescue team responded just after noon to the Turtlehead Peak trail, which is one of the Canyon’s most strenuous hikes and routinely takes about 4.5 hours to complete, police said. The man was deceased by the time officers arrived, police said.

At least one other person was hiking with the man, and there may have been other people who tried to help when they recognized he was in trouble, police said.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. The man’s name has not been released, pending notification of his family.
