Father arrested after son, 12, shoots himself

Updated Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 | 1:53 p.m.

A man is facing child abuse and weapon counts after his 12-year-old son shot himself Saturday, according to Metro Police.

Olin Manuel, 31, was arrested Wednesday on counts of child abuse resulting in death and possession of a gun by a prohibited person, police said.

The boy shot himself shortly before 7 p.m. in the 1600 block of Western Lily Street, near Buffalo and Vegas drives, police said. He died at University Medical Center.

The Clark County Coroner's Office has ruled the boy's death a suicide.

Metro’s abuse and neglect unit determined the gun was purchased by Manuel, who was not legally allowed to own a firearm. Police did not say why Manuel was barred from owning guns.

He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
