Thousands of earthquakes shook Nevada in 2015, UNR lab reports

More than 17,500 earthquakes were recorded by scientists at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2015.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/1PB0Myr ) that a Thursday report of the school's Nevada Seismological Laboratory says that total includes the 231 recent earthquakes in South Reno and the magnitude 4.8 quake that shook Las Vegas last January.

The lab says the Sheldon sequence in northwest Nevada is the biggest source of the state's earthquakes. There were 4,511 earthquakes recorded in the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge in 2015.

Caliente, Carson City and Virginia City were also home to several 2015 quakes.
