Two soccer fields at a southeast valley park near East Russell Road and South Eastern Avenue have been closed because the artificial turf is damaged and dangerous, according to Clark County officials.

Rips and tears in the turf at McCarran Marketplace Park, 5800 Surrey St., are the result of normal wear, but also from the use of banned shoe cleats and riding bicycles on the field, officials said.

The playground will remain open.

Since the fields opened in 2007, worn areas have been patched four to fives times, officials said. They will remain closed until the turf is replaced, which could cost more than $4 million, officials said.

The project is considered a priority, but it will be weighed against other needs as the county budgets for the fiscal year starting July 1.

Those who wish to use other soccer fields may visit Silverbowl Park at 6800 East Russell Road, Hidden Palms Park at 8855 Hidden Palms Parkway or Grapevine Springs Park at 5280 Palm St.
