Nevada advertises for top education job, gets 3 qualified applicants

The president of the state Board of Education says the fact that a job posting for Nevada’s top education position only garnered three qualified applicants is “validation that we’re on track.”

By law, the board must recommend three candidates for state superintendent of public instruction, so all three names will be forwarded to Gov. Brian Sandoval to make a final decision.

Among the candidates are interim Superintendent Steve Canavero, widely considered the shoe-in for the job.

“We don’t deem the lack of response as a lack of interest,” board President Elaine Wynn said. “We see it as more of a validation that we’re on track, we’re doing well and there is continuity.”

Questions have been raised as to whether the department did enough to advertise the job, which oversees about 450,000 students statewide. From mid-November to mid-December, the job was advertised on Craigslist, career websites like GlassDoor, social media and a public-sector listing service called CareersInGovernment.

The department’s human resources office said the ads “had the potential to reach 35.6 million job seekers nationwide,” though two of the three finalists, Anthony Verde and Scott Groach, mentioned only the Craigslist advertisement in their cover letters. A fourth candidate was deemed not qualified.

Verde and Groach have some teaching and management experience, according to their resumes. Canavero has worked in the department for more than five years, including as deputy superintendent.

The job came open after Dale Erquiaga, a childhood friend of Sandoval, left the post in August for a newly created position in the governor’s office.
