Authorities investigating letter, white powder sent to official in Tonopah

White powder and a threatening note sent to an elected official today in Tonopah is being investigated as domestic terrorism, according to the Nye County Sheriff’s Office.

The powder, which ended up being “100 percent cornstarch,” evacuated the Tonopah government building, officials said. The content of the letter was not released.

The letter was opened about 3 p.m. at the Nye County Clerk’s Office, 101 Radar Road, officials said. By 6:20 p.m. the building was deemed safe and the threat nonexistent.

Tonopah is located about 250 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
