Man gets 7 years for conspiracy in alleged race war plot

RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia man who pleaded guilty to conspiring to rob a jewelry dealer as part of what prosecutors say was a plot to attack synagogues and black churches has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that 31-year-old Charles Halderman was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District court.

Authorities say Halderman's co-defendant, Robert Doyle, told a government informant he wanted to use the money from the robbery to finance a race war.

Halderman's attorney says in court documents that his client was recruited to participate in the robbery and was motivated by money, not race.

Halderman said in court Tuesday that he couldn't deny his involvement in the robbery plot, but that a lot of what he and his co-defendants discussed was "just a lot of talk."
