HOUSTON — Texas Congressman Ted Poe says he has cancer.

The conservative Republican from Houston announced Wednesday that he's been diagnosed with leukemia. The 67-year-old Poe says he's being treated at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Poe said in a statement that he intends to have a full recovery and continue in Congress. Poe says he plans to spend time in Texas during the congressional recess and focus on his health.

"It is my intention to beat cancer and have a full recovery and continue to represent the people of Texas. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and your prayers. The Good Lord will fix this," Poe said.

The former prosecutor and ex-judge represents District 2. Poe has served in the U.S. House since 2005. He represents a safe GOP district.
