Three Nevadans will appear at the Democratic National Convention next week in Philadelphia to share their experiences with immigration.
Local activist and Dreamer Astrid Silva will appear alongside First Lady Michelle Obama and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders at the convention Monday night, speaking on the theme “United Together.”
“I’ve always called myself a Nevadan, and to be there representing our state, it’s a great honor,” Silva said. “It’s a really big responsibility. I hope I’m able to represent our state.”
Francisca Ortiz and her daughter Karla Ortiz will also talk about their experiences with immigration during the convention on Monday. Karla Ortiz is an American citizen, but her mother and father are undocumented.
Karla Ortiz shared her story with Hillary Clinton at an immigration roundtable in Las Vegas in February and was featured prominently in one of Clinton’s ad campaigns.
