One dead, three injured in rollover crash that may have involved racing, alcohol

One person is dead and three others are wounded after a single-vehicle rollover crash early Sunday morning near Corn Creek Road and Landy Street.

About 12:55 a.m., a man was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup west on Corn Creek at a high rate of speed when it struck a dip in the roadway, according to Metro Police.

The bottom of the truck hit the ground, causing the suspension to collapse and the undercarriage to scrape the ground, police said. The driver lost control of the truck and ran off the roadway.

The truck rolled several times and came to a rest on its roof in the westbound lane of Corn Creek, east of U.S. Route 95, police said.

The 28-year-old driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the truck and landed in the desert area on the north side of the roadway, police said. He died on the scene.

Two women, 20 and 23, who were sitting in the back seat were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center with moderate injuries, police said. The front-seat passenger, a 19-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to UMC.

Witnesses told police they observed the truck racing with a white full-size truck when the crash occurred and that the truck continued driving away from the scene after the wreck. The driver of the white truck is still being sought, police said.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

This marks the 59th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction for 2016.
