Arson probed after minor fires at Mormon church, union hall

Local and federal authorities are investigating a pair of apparent arson attempts at a Mormon church and a neighboring firefighters' union hall in downtown Las Vegas.

No injuries were reported, and officials say both fires burned themselves out with little damage before firefighters arrived about 6:15 a.m. Monday.

Las Vegas fire spokesman Tim Szymanski tells Fox 5 KVVU-TV that it's clear the fires were intentionally set.

Szymanski didn't immediately respond Tuesday to messages.

Officials first discovered damage at the Church of Latter-day Saints building on 9th Street after police responding to a report of an apparent break-in found smoke in the building.

Firefighters then noticed an open door, broken glass and minor burn damage at the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1285 building across the street.
