Updated Thursday, July 28, 2016 | 3:18 p.m.

SPARKS — Sparks police fatally shot a suspect who allegedly failed to comply with orders Thursday during a traffic stop for high-speed, reckless driving in a residential area in the northeast part of town, Reno police said.

The unidentified man was shot just before 11 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene near the Sparks Recreation Center.

Sparks police spokesman Ken Gallop confirmed that Reno police are leading an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Reno police spokesman Tim Broadway said the Sparks police dispatcher received several calls starting at 10:42 a.m. about "a reckless driver who had hit several vehicles and was traveling at a high rate of speed in the wrong lanes of traffic."

Officers conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the man, Broadway said. But he said "events unfolded and at one point officers opened fire, shooting and killing the male occupant in the vehicle."

No one else was hurt. No other details have been released.

KKOH Radio reported the man was driving on residential streets at up to 70 mph.

The City of Sparks said on its Twitter account that children attending a summer recreation program were locked safely inside the Richards Way gym. The nearby Sparks Senior Center also was placed on a temporary lockdown, Washoe County officials said. The nearby Greenbrae Elementary School was not in session.

Traffic was being rerouted around the area.
