A man described as having a transient past, violent tendencies and a possible history of mental illness is believed to have killed his parents before taking his own life at a Summerlin neighborhood, according to Metro Police.

Officers were called about noon Wednesday to a gated community in the 10300 block of Wood Owl Court, near Town Center and Anasazi drives, Lt. Dan McGrath said. They found three bodies with gunshot and stab wounds, he said.

A family member not present at the home alerted police about a possible domestic disturbance, McGrath said.

It wasn’t immediately clear when the slayings and suicide happened, McGrath said. “It’s a family tragedy,” he said.

McGrath described the son only as a man in his 30s. His family told police he had a transient past and had made threats, McGrath said. He had been staying with his parents the past few months.

It appears the parents were Chicago residents and the Summerlin house might have been a second home to them, McGrath said.

Authorities Wednesday afternoon were in the process of alerting out-of-state family about the deaths, McGrath said.

"I don't know what to say other than to express our condolences to the family (about) what they have to go through and they've gone through," he said.

McGrath, who said he would rather not publicize the deaths, commented on mental illness. "I just hope that if there's somebody in this position," they will reach out to get help.
