Unemployment in Las Vegas area edges up in May

CARSON CITY — The jobless rate in the Las Vegas was 6.4 percent in May, but there was a strong gain in employment in the leisure and hospitality industry, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

May’s rate was up from 6.1 percent in April.

Around the state, the unemployment rate ranged from 4.7 percent in White Pine County to 8.9 percent in Mineral County.

The jobless rate in Washoe County rose from 5.4 percent to 5.5 percent in May. Carson City’s rate fell from 6.7 to 6.5 percent.
