Crews and aircraft were working today to contain a 250-acre wildfire in a mountain canyon about 25 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Ray Johnson said today the fire quickly grew to more than 200 acres Sunday in Lovell Canyon, but air tankers using water and fire retardant helped slow the spread of flames.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.

The fire was about 35 percent contained, the Forest Service said. There was no estimate on how long it would take to completely contain the blaze.

Johnson said 150 firefighters were at the scene about 4 miles off State Route 160.

Johnson says the hamlet of Mountain Springs, about 5 miles away, and Torino Ranch summer camp about 7 miles away aren't threatened.

Johnson says foliage is exceptionally dry, and the fire may be human-caused.

He says it's being investigated.
