A 20-year-old man was sentenced to 12 to 40 years in state prison for driving under the influence of drugs and causing a crash that killed a 6-year-old girl and her grandmother at a Las Vegas bus stop 11 months ago.
Leonardo Ruesga apologized during sentencing Thursday for causing the deaths of 58-year-old Maria Garcia and her granddaughter, Alyssa Aisa.
About a dozen family members were in court, wearing T-shirts remembering the two killed when a 2005 Volvo S60 hit them near a busy intersection last March 30.
One spoke of the emotional pain they've endured.
Ruesga admitted in his plea that he had marijuana and methamphetamine in his system.
A witness followed the fleeing car to an apartment complex, where Ruesga and a passenger were found hiding.
