Sparks businessman first to file for election

CARSON CITY — A Sparks businessman filed for election today to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei, saying his run “will be by the bootstraps.”

Richard Shepherd, a Democrat, was the first person to file for election with the Secretary of State’s Office in Carson City. It is his first run for political office.

The election filing period for non-judicial offices starts today and continues through March 18. Some people have already announced a bid for an office but need to formally file during the two-week window to make it official.

Amodei, who represents Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, is expected to file for re-election on Thursday.

Candidates seeking office in a district that’s entirely contained in one county must register with their county clerk. All others register through the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office.

Candidates must appear in person to pay a filing fee, show identification and complete paperwork.

The primary election is scheduled for June 14, and the general election is set for Nov. 8.
