Governor marks 100th anniversary of battleship USS Nevada

CARSON CITY — Nearly 200 people, including veterans and politicians, showed up in Carson City today to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the battleship USS Nevada in 1916.

The ship served during the last few months of World War I and earned the distinction of being the only battleship to get underway during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, though it was still hit by a torpedo and bombs.

After World War II, the ship was used as a target during tests of the atomic bomb in 1946 and was sunk during naval gunfire practice in 1948.

During today’s ceremony, Gov. Brian Sandoval presented a medal to Charlie Sehe, who was aboard the ship when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. “I can’t believe I’m standing with the governor of the state of Nevada,” he said.

Sehe was 18 years old when he was assigned to the Nevada in February 1941. He served his military duty aboard the ship during the war.

The present USS Nevada is a ballistic missile submarine.
