Bus or light rail? RTC seeks input on Maryland Parkway transit improvements

The Regional Transportation Commission will hold three public meetings this week about whether bus rapid transit or urban light rail is best suited for Maryland Parkway.

At the meetings, the commission wants feedback about initial concepts for transit improvements to the corridor and input on which technology would best meet the needs of nearby neighborhoods.

The commission said in a statement that the meetings will be conducted in an open-house format, so handout materials will be provided and staff will be available to answer questions.

The first meeting will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the UNLV Student Union. The second meeting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Boulevard Mall in front of JC Penney, and the third meeting will be 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the lobby of the Bonneville Transit Center.

Discussions about light rail on Maryland Parkway come as Southern Nevada leaders are considering a range of other improvements to the region’s transportation infrastructure. Light rail has also been proposed to connect the airport with the Strip and downtown Las Vegas, and the commission last week led a group of about 50 local leaders on a trip to Denver to learn about that city’s mass transit.
