Some oppose rules limiting junk food in Reno, Sparks schools

RENO — Some are speaking out against new restrictions that could cut soda, chips and sweets from public schools in Reno and Sparks.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Washoe County School District wellness regulations are setting limits on sodium, sugar, fat and calories per serving.

The restrictions would apply to items sold or provided to students during the school day, not food or drinks they bring themselves.

Public schools nationwide must meet similar snack standards in exchange for the federal government subsidizing meals for low-income students.

Retired schoolteacher Carol Rice said at meeting this week that it's the responsibility of parents, not schools, to teach nutrition.

Rice told members of the district's Student Wellness Advisory Committee that they're supposed to be protecting students at school, "but not from a candy bar."
