Man accused of killing family suffered from PTSD

The family of an ex-soldier who served in Iraq says he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder leading up to a shooting spree in which police say he killed his wife, their two children, and then himself in their Kentucky home.

Brad L. Hettinger's family released a statement Wednesday saying the 33-year-old Army Reserve veteran was seeking help for complications associated with PTSD and was attending marriage counseling with his wife.

The statement described him as a "family-centered man" who served his country with valor.

Army records show Hettinger served in the Army Reserve between 2001 and 2013.

He was deployed to Iraq for 10 months in 2011.

The family's statement was released to WAVE-TV in Louisville.

Police say Hettinger killed his family and then set the house on fire on Sunday.
