Man, 86, killed in rear-end crash at red light

Updated Friday, March 25, 2016 | 1 p.m.

An 86-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon when his car was rear-ended while stopped at a red light, according to Metro Police.

The crash, which involved five vehicles, happened about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Charleston and Rampart boulevards, police said.

A 21-year-old woman was driving a Chrysler 200 convertible at a high rate of speed south on Rampart when she crashed into a Toyota Camry stopped at a red light, police said. The Chrysler hit the Camry with “enough force to become lodged into the rear half of the vehicle,” police said.

The driver of the Camry was killed, and the woman driving the convertible was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries, police said.

The impact of the crash pushed the Camry into another car stopped at the light, and all three vehicles went into the intersection, where an SUV and a sedan also got tangled up in the wreck, police said.

A 71-year-old motorist suffered moderate injuries, while two other drivers and a juvenile passenger had minor injuries, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
