A man who was barricaded and possibly armed inside his apartment this morning near Cashman Middle School was taken into custody after a lengthy standoff, according to Metro Police.

Police evacuated the surrounding apartments and closed Sirius Avenue from Cameron to Arville streets, Officer Brent Garcia said.. The school was not locked down or evacuated because the situation was deemed “under control." The streets reopened after the arrest.

The standoff stems from a domestic violence call about 11 p.m. Wednesday, in which a woman said her boyfriend was threatening her and attempting to break into her apartment.

"We are familiar with this subject, so we responded accordingly," Garcia said, adding that the man has a history of domestic violence.

Also according to Garcia:

The man was gone Wednesday when police arrived at the apartment. Police later found his vehicle near Charleston Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, and a short chase ensued before police called it off in the interest of public safety. Later this morning, police found the vehicle at the man's apartment on Sirius Avenue.

The man has refused to exit the apartment, and his family members have told police there are weapons inside the home.
