Woman held on arson count after fire at northwest valley apartments

Updated Friday, May 13, 2016 | 3:55 p.m.

A woman was being held on suspicion of first-degree arson following a fire Friday morning that injured a man and forced more than 40 people to leave a northwest valley apartment complex.

Shirlena Rutherford, 61, is being held at the Clark County Detention Center. She allegedly started the fire during a domestic dispute in one of the apartments.

According to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue:

Heavy flames were showing from a downstairs unit at the complex when crews responded about 4 a.m. to Cornerstone Crossings Apartments at 6666 W. Washington Ave., near North Rainbow Boulevard. The blaze appeared to have started in a downstairs unit and worked its way into the apartment above, then into the attic.

Shortly after firefighters arrived, flames broke through the roof on one side of the building.

It took firefighters nearly an hour to bring the blaze under control. They contained it to half of the apartment building.

Three apartments and the attic were gutted. Five other units sustained heat, smoke and water damage. Property damage is estimated at $500,000.

One man was taken to the hospital to be treated for a fracture and a small burn to his hand.

Metro Police assisted in the evacuation. The American Red Cross helped people who could not return to their apartments.
