Elaborate sculpture by street artist on display in Detroit

DETROIT — A 20-foot tall, 400-pound installation by a New York street artist is being displayed in the Great Hall of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Caledonia "Callie" Curry's elaborate sculpture titled "Thalassa" was originally created for the New Orleans Museum of Art, where it was on view in 2011. It's being adapted for a site-specific installation in Detroit starting Saturday and is on display until March 19.

The sculpture is made of plywood on a steel frame and covered with paper cut-outs and prints.

Curry is known by the name Swoon. In a statement, she says that "Detroit and its powerful history have always been an inspiration."

The installation will coincide with a community mural project that's taking place in Detroit's Jefferson-Chalmers district.
