Nevada assemblywoman proposes family planning program

CARSON CITY — A Las Vegas assemblywoman is calling for the state to establish a family planning program.

Assemblywoman Yvanna Cancela told the Senate Finance Committee today that her bill could help prevent unplanned pregnancies.

Senate Bill 122 would provide money to local nonprofit agencies, particularly in rural Nevada. The organizations would distribute contraceptive devices and provide “preconception health services.” They would also test and treat people for sexually transmitted diseases.

Money for the program would come from the federal government, donations and grants.

Conservative lobbyist Janine Hansen opposed the bill, saying the grants could go to Planned Parenthood and be used to fund abortions.

The committee did not take action on the measure.
