Committee clears bills just ahead of do-or-die deadline

CARSON CITY — Bills involving subjects from energy to the importing of elephant tusks cleared the Senate Committee on Commerce, Labor and Energy today.

The committee approved about 40 bills to meet a deadline by which legislation must be acted upon or die in committee.

Senate Bill 145 would provide $1 million a year for the installation of solar energy systems to benefit low-income citizens and homeless shelters. There would be incentives for those who install solar energy storage units.

The legislation by Sen. Pat Spearman, D-North Las Vegas, promotes the expansion of electric cars. There would be incentives for those who install charging stations for electric cars.

The Nevada Pregnant Workers Act also was approved by the committee.

Senate Bill 253 by Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro, D-Las Vegas, would require employers to provide reasonable accommodations to pregnant workers and new mothers. Those would include modified equipment, revising break schedules, assisting with manual labor or authorizing light duty.

The committee also approved a bill by Sen. Mo Denis, D-Las Vegas, to prohibit the sale of certain animal parts such as elephant tusks or parts of a rhinoceros, tiger, lion, cheetah, sea turtle or hippopotamus. Some sales, such as those involving antiques, would be exempt.
