A man who the Nye County Sheriff's Office says tried bribing two investigators with $30,000 to be able to grow marijuana with impunity was arrested today.

Robert Samuel Behrens Jr., 51, entered a county sheriff's office about 5 p.m. today and asked to speak with a sergeant whose name he knew, officials said. Behrens told the sergeant that he felt he was "shady" and wanted to know if he'd accept a bribe.

The sergeant summoned an undercover detective and Behrens repeated the offer and expanded on the details, telling them he wanted to grow marijuana illegally in Amargosa Valley without being arrested, officials said. That's when he was detained on two counts of bribery of a public officer and one count of burglary.

He was booked on $25,000 bail at the Nye County Detention Center, officials said. It wasn't immediately clear if he's posted bail.

Voters legalized recreational marijuana in Nevada in November, but it remains illegal to sell marijuana anywhere other than a licensed marijuana dispensary and illegal to buy anywhere other than a licensed marijuana dispensary.
