Committee releases $25 million for UNLV medical school building

CARSON CITY — UNLV President Len Jessup told a legislative committee today there are three to four potential prospects to donate $25 million or more to help finance construction of a medical school building.

The Legislative Interim Finance Committee voted unanimously to release $25 million in state funds toward the $250 million project.

The school already has received $25 million from one donor. The initial contribution will be used to finance the design, which will take two years and cost an estimated $22 million.

Jessup declined to name the potential donors but said there was a lot of excitement in Southern Nevada about construction of the medical school.

The building will be in the Las Vegas Medical District near downtown. Construction is expected to start in October 2019 and be finished in August 2022.
